Industry News and Leaders Working Smarter What's New in Montréal

Happening from May 13 to 15, 2025, in Montréal, the fifth edition of the Sustainable Finance Summit 2025 — the largest event of its kind in North America — unites more than 80 leading experts in finance, economics, climate and biodiversity who will address an audience of over a thousand participants on the theme Aligning Finance with Planetary Boundaries. It’s a pressing issue indeed, and one that’s of primary concern for Montréal, a city that has achieved the highest ever GreenStep certification score in Canada.

The ideal city for this event

A city boasting some beautiful LEED-certified event venues, Montréal’s positioning as a sustainable tourism destination was recognized by GreenStep. The city was awarded the Silver-level GreenStep certification, with a score of 74% — the highest score ever recorded for a destination certified by this Canadian organization. Recognized internationally for its expertise in sustainable tourism, GreenStep evaluates and ranks both tourism offices and the destinations they represent in a rigorous evaluation process.

Investing in tomorrow

Despite the challenges brought on by the current political and economic context, the Sustainable Finance Summit is evidence that Montréal’s leadership in sustainable finance holds strong. Established in 2010, Finance Montréal — the financial cluster of Quebec and the organizer of the summit — is at the heart of the development and promotion of the province’s financial services industry and its positioning as a global business hub that is growing, competitive, attractive and innovative.

Speakers at the Sustainable Finance Summit 2025 will include Catherine McKenna, Founder and CEO of Climate & Nature Solutions and Chair of the United Nations high-level expert group on net zero emissions commitments of non-state entities; Emmanuel Faber, Chair, International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB); Marc-André Blanchard, Executive Vice-President and Head of CDPQ Global, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ); and Barbara Zvan, President and CEO, University Pension Plan (UPP).
